Much of my research focuses on gender and economic themes in nineteenth-century and fin-de-siècle literature. I have also recently turned my attention to children’s literature, as well as popular horror (including Vampire Studies). I am interested in working with students on questions of class and social reform in nineteenth-century fiction, gender and feminist writings in the Victorian period, and horror fiction or representations of the monstrous ‘Other’ in policing bodies of desire

My research interests include ecocriticism, midcentury American poetry, music studies, genre studies, and pop culture studies. My dissertation focuses on the relationship between popular music and environmental activism, and the unique intersection of identity, performance, and art that forms this relationship. I am also interested in the unique relationship today between fame, social media, and activism.

My dissertation centers on the act of Slumming; I argue that re-engaging with the Victorian, through acts of “historical slumming” in neo-Victorian media, is an inherently Gothic practice. I look at a range of different textual forms: novels, comics, manga, video games, and film and television. How we tell stories through these forms and how the reader/viewer/player is asked to engage with the text is something I find fascinating and grapple with in my work.
